AST's Murugiah (Spore) plays
at the Insperity Invitational 2015
on the US Champions Tour

04 May 2015

The Asian Senior Tour was established in 2003 during the ASM @ Singapore

How Murugiah (Singapore) won his place to play in the Insperity Invitational 2015

Photos and results from the Insperity Invitational 2014

Once again a very BIG thank you to Insperity, United Healthcare and the Champions Tour for the great opportunity extended to our AST members!

Words of support and encouragement for Murugiah received from the Singapore Government

We greatly appreciate the kind moral support received from Mr. John Lim - President and members of the Malaysian & Singaporean Association of Houston (MSAH)
- for information about the MSAH visit - www.msahouston.org

Everything was 1st class all the way and we had a fantastic time in Houston !!!

Dinner and an evening with the Legends of Golf !!

We also had Foreigner as our band for the Insperity dinner & draw party, everyone over 45 was rocking away dressed to the 9s in their finest whilst the younger generation looked on a little worried and wondering what these mad OAP rockers and the band were no about.... last year we had Huey Lewis and the News - it does not get much better than that.....

We were also treated to the Elton John concert which was really great fun - the old man still has what it takes to entertain.....

With regards to the golf - despite our representative Murugiah (Singapore) unfortunately having a very tough day in the office on the last day..... he was a very good ambassador for Singapore and the Asian Seniors Tour, as he knew many of the senior professionals from their days playing on the Asian circuit when Muru was just starting out... and they were genuinely supportive of his achievement at getting a spot in the tournament and very friendly towards him.

Muruguah started off full of promise returning a most impressive 70 - 2 under par during his practice round which really got my hopes up for a top 30 finish...........

He really did very well on the first day shooting 73 to finish 1 over on the 1st day lying tied at 54th place with the likes of Brad Bryant, Hale Irwin, Mark Calcavecchia and Tommy Armour III

To be fair to Muru and put things in perspective - as he was up against some of the best senior professional golfers in the world here was how the field stood after the 1st day -

at - 6 tied 1st - Marco Dawson and Michael Allen

at - 5 tied 3rd - Colin Montgomerie, Jeff Maggert, and Joe Durant

at - 4 tied 6th - Billy Andrade, and Steve Pate

at - 3 tied 8th -
Esteban Toledo, Jeff Sluman, Jesper Parnevik , Kevin Sutherland, Mark O'Meara, Olin Browne, Scott Hoch, Stephen Ames, and Wes Short

at - 2 tied 17th -
Bart Bryant, Duffy Waldorf, Fred Funk, John Cook, Kenny Perry, Kirk Triplett, Mark McNulty, Mark Wiebe, Mike Goodes, Roger Chapman, Russ Cochran, Sandy Lyle, Tom Lehman, and Woody Austin

at - 1 tied 31st -
Bernhard Langer, Brian Henninger, Corey Pavin, Frank Esposito, Gary Hallberg, Gene Sauers, Gil Morgan, Ian Woosnam, Jay Don Blake, Larry Mize, Peter Senior, Scott Dunlap, Tom Kite, and Tom Pernice

at level par 0 tied 45th -
Bob Gilder, Bob Tway, Curtis Strange, Dan Forsman, Joe Daley, Lee Janzen, Tim Elliott, Tom Byrum, and Willie Wood

The next day was tougher and a test of his reserves and resolve as Muru dropped 5 strokes over the course of the 2nd day carding a 77 to place join 63rd with a 2 day score of 150 at 6 over - ahead of Steve Elkington, Steve Lowery, Joey Sindelar, Fuzzy Zoeller, Jim Thorpe and Ben Crenshaw

Unfortunately on the 3rd day the wheels on the bus came off - a mixture of jet lag, the weather (the wind picked up something our boys in Asia are not used to) and the over whelming pressure to do better - it probably didn't help that I had written personal emails to the entire Singapore government to encourage them to wish Muru well and get behind him.... Muru dropped a further 13 strokes, carding an 85 - to finish joint 75th place with a 3 day score 235 - tied with Fuzzy Zoeller and Jim Thorpe - 3 better than Ben Crenshaw who came last with 238

Still joint 75th against some of the best senior professional golfers in the world is NO small achievement - so well done Muru !!
