Overnight leader Brian Jones is still two shots clear of the nearest contender after day two of the Titanium Enterprises Australian PGA Seniors Championship currently being played at Club Pelican on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Victorian Trevor McDonald (71) and New Zealander Barry Vivian (73) are the next best with a round two total of 146.
Jones shot a second round score of 76, eight shots more than his previous days 68 and was obviously disappointed he couldn’t back up on his impressive start but he is confident he can put today’s play out of his mind and pull two solid rounds together over the weekend.
“I wasn’t pleased at all with the finish” Jones said. “I just need to clear out today’s play from my mind and not worry about what I had the day before on a hole.”
One of the best shots of the day came from Trevor McDonald who sank a 20ft putt on the ninth to birdie the hole and move into equal second place. McDonald was two over after nine holes but managed to birdie three holes on the finishing nine to end the day with a one under par 71.
“I was pretty happy with today” McDonald said. “I three putted a couple of holes but overall it was a good round.”
New Zealander, Barry Vivian was again Mr Consistent and shot a 73 to be tied with McDonald for second place. Fellow Kiwi, Craig Owen also moved into contention with a best round of the day, 70 to be tied in fifth spot with Trevor Downing, while local resident John Victorsen shot a one over 73 to be outright fourth.
One of the biggest movers of the day was Gold Coast resident Garry Campbell who improved on his previous days score by 14 shots. Campbell shot rounds of 85, 71 for a total of 156 to be tied 37th overall.
With two days left of play and expected strong winds over the weekend, the stage is certainly set for a close finish for the title.
