The 2005 Great Canadian Iceberg Charity Golf Challenge Supports the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore is pleased to announce its third annual charity golf event, which once again promises to be “A Cool Time in a Hot Clime!” The benefit charity will be the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.

Sponsored by DaimlerChrysler South East Asia Pte Ltd - Singapore Operations, Nortel, Air Canada and Telus International, among others, the event will bring together foreign and Singaporean business and community leaders for a day of sport, fun and networking at the Sentosa Golf Club on Friday, May 20.

The funds raised from the tournament activities, which include a charity raffle, silent auction, and an array of golfing skill games, will be donated to the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund to help provide support for the nutritional needs of children from low-income families.

“Nortel is honoured to be an Emerald sponsor in the Canadian Chamber of Commerce's community effort to raise funds for a good cause,” said Country Manager Ang Thiam Guan, Nortel Singapore. “As a responsible corporate citizen, we want to do our part and contribute to the less fortunate children of this country.”

“The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund has been a blessing to the 11,000 children it helped last year and Mercedes-Benz hopes that our effort is part of a larger conscious movement to increase the number of beneficiaries of this fund this year,” adds Wolfgang Huppenbauer, Managing Director DaimlerChrysler South East Asia Pte Ltd - Singapore Operations.

The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund was created in 2000 by The Straits Times newspaper to heighten public awareness of the plight of children from low-income families who attend school without proper breakfast or pocket money.

The aim of the fund is to alleviate the financial burden faced by parents in providing for their children's education. At the same time, the funds will help children who are already facing difficulties in remaining in school to stay on.

“We chose to contribute to the Straits Times School Pocket Money fund to show our commitment to the future of Singapore – its children,” said Ms. Elizabeth McDougall, Executive Director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore.

“Last year we were able to raise $9,000 and we hope to top that this year for the many families out there that send their kids to school without lunch,” she said. “On an empty stomach, how can you expect to study?”

“With more than 100 players from a wide variety of countries competing at one of Singapore’s most prestigious courses, this will be an event to remember,” said Ms. McDougall. “Besides fantastic networking, there will be lots of fun competitions and attractive prizes.”

The charity golf event will see 132 golfers and VIPs matching their skills against the award-winning Serapong member’s course at Sentosa. The teams will compete for the prestigious High Commissioner’s Polar Cup to be awarded by the Guest of Honour, His Excellency Alan Virtue, High Commissioner for Canada, among other individual prizes.

Players will also compete for two “Hole-in-One” prizes: a Mercedes-Benz C-Class C180 Kompressor car sponsored by DaimlerChrysler South East Asia Pte Ltd - Singapore Operations
