Asian Seniors Tour’s
2 times ASM @ Malaysia
Champion Stewart Ginn
at Senior British Open

29 July 2007

Ginn shot a 3 under 69 on Saturday to make his 54-hole total 3 under par
with 210, closely pursued by the two former Open Champions, Tom Watson and
Mark O’Meara, with the rest of the top ten on the leader board
all just within six shots of him.

After his round, and having recovered from starting with two bogeys, he was heard to say;

“It’s not easy out there, as all you guys know. It’s a course you have to be patient with and do the best you can out there.

“I mean, you’ve got the best Senior players in the world here – Watson and O’Meara are both Open Champions – so I know who’s here and what it’s going to take. There are a lot of guys chasing me, but I haven’t got time to think about that. What’s going to be is going to be. You’ve just got to play golf and you’re in the golf God’s hands.”

Whilst possibly slightly less divine, Ginn did have the capable helping hands of his new caddie, Alan Morin a local Gullane resident on his bag for the first time and Morin clubbed him expertly to set up the crucial birdies on 15 and 16

“We go back to 1972 and Open qualifying for the Open here. I came over with a few other Aussie professionals, Jack Newton, Ian Stanley, Bob Shearer, and stayed at Alan’s father’s place in Gullane. So when I came back, I thought I’d ask Alan to come on the bag, He knows this course far better than me, he lives in Gullane, and it’s working well so far,"

"We’re both enjoying it. It’s exciting. We’re right in it."

Ginn won the Ford Senior Players’ Championship on the US Champions Tour five years ago in 2002 but ranks The Senior Open Championship higher.

“This is an Open Championship, and I think everybody, doesn’t matter what part of the world they are from, sees it that way. The Ford Senior is not an Open Championship. I class this as a Major.”

Unfortunately for Ginn, on the final day Watson prevailed, showing that his talent for links golf remain as brilliant as ever after he won a record equalling third Senior Open, by one shot from Stewart Ginn and Mark O’Meara.

Ginn's new man on the bag KL resident William Cheng at the 2006 Asian Senior Masters @ Malaysia staged from 17 - 19 November 2006 proved more successful where Ginn finally beat Thailand’s Amphon Maneerat in a sudden death play off.

During the course of the 2006 ASM @ Malaysia Ginn shot a 1 under 71, and a 2 under 70 for a two day total of 141 at 3 under, finishing on the Sunday with a 2 under par 70 for a total of 211 at 5 under.

Similarly, Thailand’s Amphon Maneerat who had just won the 2006 Asian Senior Masters @ Singapore held the week prior, shot a course record 5 under par 67, and a level par 0 for a two day total of 139 at 5 under, finishing the 2006 ASM @ Malaysia with a level par 72 for a total of 211 at 5 under.

Earlier in the year Ginn didn’t fare quite so well in April at the inaugural 2006 Asian Senior Master @ Phuket – Thailand much of which can be put down to jet lag having just kindly returned from overseas the previous evening so as to contest the event the next day.
