Asian Seniors Tour Communications

On the final day of the 2008 ASM @ Malaysia
Sutep Bunpimuk – (Thailand) closed and later reversed
M Ramayah’s – (Malaysia) 2 stroke lead on the final day to
emerge as this year’s ASM @ Malaysia Champion.

The 2008 ASM @ Malaysia was staged from
17th - 19th October 2008 at Tasik Puteri GCC.

Sutep Bunpimuk shooting 74 on the final day returned 221 beating
the ASM @ Malaysia's leader for the first 2 days, M Ramayah
by 3 strokes who shoot a final day 79 returning 224

Eduardo Bagtas – (Philippines) and Lai Chung Hui – (Taiwan) emerging joint 3rd returned 228

2008 ASM @ Malaysia leaders & last flight on the final day, from left to right, Ramayah, Bagtas and Sutep.

It all came down to the 18th when unfortunately Ramayah's approach shot went wide, ending his chances of forcing Sutep into a sudden death play off.

For Ramayah this was such an unfortunate outcome, and echo's the final day of the 2007 ASM @ Malaysian, when Chen Tsang Te from Taiwan managed a final round 68, including a birdie on the 18th, to beat Ramayah, who also birdied the last hole. Chen returned a tour record winning score of 10 under par 206, beating M Ramayah by a single stroke.

Ramayah a regular on the Asian Seniors Tour since its foundation in 2003 and has consistently placed high up on the ASM leader boards, we wish him better luck next year and hope that he might emerge as the first Malaysian to win an Asian Seniors Tour event. Here's to his success at the 2009 ASM @ Malaysia.

The 4th edition of the annual Asian Senior Masters @ Malaysia was undoubtedly the most ambitious event yet, with the various Pro-Ams being staged at different venues, including IOI Palm Garden GC, Glenmarie GCC, Saujana GCC and Tasik Puteri GCC prior to the ASM @ Malaysia championship.

The 2008 ASM @ Malaysia Amateur Champion, Wong Tan Khua shot a commendable 76 to lead the field followed by Hamdan Zambahari shooting 77 coming in 2nd. Defending 2007 ASM @ Malaysia Amateur Champion Wong Pau San along with Chen Yew Beng who both shot 79 came join 3rd. We were most pleased to see so many of the regular ASM @ Malaysia semi-finalists contesting this year's event.

The Asian Seniors Tour moves on to Indonesia for the staging of the inaugural
Asian Senior Masters @ Batam from 21th - 24th October 2008.

Taiwan’s Chung Chun Hsing wins the AIA Singapore ASM 2007
staged at Jurong Country Club from 10 - 16 September 2007

Chung Chun Hsing won his second Asian Seniors Tour victory after shooting a steady final round 72 to finish with an impressive 8-under par total of 208 at the AIA Singapore Asian Senior Masters 2007 staged at JCC for the 3rd time since the inaugural 2003 ASM @ Singapore

Mark O’Dell Executive Vice President & General Manager AIA Singapore ( left ) presenting the
AIA Singapore ASM 2007 Champion's trophy to Chung Chun Hsing

Chung’s AIA Singapore ASM 2007 victory makes it two in a row adding to his maiden AST victory at the inaugural 2006 ASM @ Phuket - Thailand and together with fellow country man Chen Tsang Te’s victory the week before at the 2007 ASM @ Malaysia made it a clean sweep for Taiwan

Tied in second place on 4-under par were American, Peter Teravainen, Eduardo Bagtas from the Philippines, Craig Owen from New Zealand and Phachoen Prempleeda from Thailand.

Singapore also featured in the top ten with local favourite Poh Eng Chong returning a great last round 3-under par 69 to finish on a 3-under total of 213 which was matched by Australia's David Saunders, after he shot the low round of the day, a 6-under par 66.

Saunders also challenged in last week's 2007 ASM @ Malaysia event and it will only be a matter of time before he breaks through for his first major Asian Seniors Tour victory.

Singapore based Terevainen, playing in his first Asian Seniors Tour event, had plenty of opportunities to challenge the overnight leader Chung.

In the end Chung only needed to shoot a last round event par 72 to hold off Teravainen and the other determined challengers to record his second victory on the Asian Seniors Tour.

The legendary Hsieh Min Nan once again showed the young seniors a thing or two by returning an even par 216 on a course that some of the new seniors found, at the very least, challenging.

The final round of the AIA Singapore ASM 2007 also resulted in another impressive winner of the AIA Singapore ASM Amateur Championship, one of Singapore's leading junior prospects, Joshua Shou (SICC), who fired an impressive two under par 70 to just edge out Gregory Foo (SICC) who returned an even par 72.

Just one shot back in third place was Russell Lim with a 1-over par 73, and a star of the future, 11 year old Jennifer Yan, who shot consecutive rounds of 76.

Main sponsors, AIA Singapore, announced that they were well pleased with the success of the tournament and plan to continue to ensure that the AIA Singapore ASM 2008 event will involve even more of Singapore's leading amateur and junior golfers.

The ASM tournament format allows leading juniors and amateurs golfers of all ages and gender the opportunity to play alongside the Legends of Golf under testing tournament conditions, thus resulting in quality golf and future champions taking home the overall amateur title.

The 2008 AIA Singapore ASM will also for the first time feature an AIA Singapore 8 ball pool tournament featuring an as yet to be decided cash prize to the top 3 participants, open to ONLY the amateur and professional golfers contesting next years 2008 AIA Singapore ASM event.

There is expected to be a modest SG$ 10 entry fee with all proceeds being donated to the SGA and SLGA Junior Golf development fund.

Stewart Ginn Retains ASM Malaysia title in Sudden Death Playoff against Thailand's Amphon Maneerat.
The 2006 ASM Malaysia was staged from 17 - 19 November 2006 at the Palm Garden Golf Club.

Australia's Stewart Ginn - (right) receiving his trophy from Malaysia's Sports Commissioner - Tan Sri Elyas Omar - (center) with the 2006 ASM @ Malaysia amateur Chapion Ilya Jamal - (left)

Stewart the defending ASM @ Malaysia Champion retained his title at the 2006 ASM Malaysia with a playoff victory over last weeks' ASM @ Singapore Champion Amphon Maneerat.

At one stage Thailand's Amphon Maneerat reached seven under par, however, consistent play by Stewart Ginn, (despite a one hour rain delay) who held his nerve to overtake Amphon, who had a double bogey at the par three 17th hole. Both players returned a three day five under par score of 211

Ginn, a former Champions Tour Major winner who ran fifth on this year’s European Seniors Tour won the 2005 ASM Malaysia on his Asian Seniors Tour debut at Palm Resort Golf & Country Club. With back-to-back victories, Ginn will no doubt be hoping to make this a three in row success at the 2007 ASM Malaysia.

In third place was Chang Chin Kuo from Chinese Taipei on 213 followed in fourth place by Eduardo Bagtas Jr from the Philippines. Malaysia’s Nazamuddin Yusof on 215 was tied for fifth with Sutep Boonpimuk from Thailand and Trevor Fisher from South Africa who was playing in the final group.

Rounding out the top ten, on two over par 218, were Juanito Pagurusan from the Philippines and Asian Seniors Tour regulars, Masahiro Tokunaga from Japan and Australia’s Trevor Downing.

Ginn was happy with the course conditions and grateful that seniors tournaments are now being held on a regular basis in Asia as he has now been based in Malaysia for many years.

Leading Malaysian amateur, 15 year old Ilyia Jamil, won the 2006 ASM Malaysia Amateur Championship by one shot over 2005 ASM Malaysia Amateur Champion, Feldman Tan from Singapore after returning a fine score of 74.

Ilyia will be invited to defend his title at the 2007 ASM Malaysia and be invited to play in the 2007 ASM Singapore. Unfortunately, the 2003 ASM Singapore Amateur Champion and the Singapore Amateur Open Champion of 2005 retired after only eight holes.

The Ladies Championship was won by Ms June Yap from Malaysia who returned sensational back-to-back scores of 77 and 76 whilst playing with the men. The occasion was graced by Tan Sri Elyas Omar, the Sports Commissioner of Malaysia who gave away the prizes to the champions.

Stewart Ginn won the 2005 Asian Senior Masters tournament at Palm Resort Golf and Country Club today without ever having lost the lead. Ginn completed the tournament with a two-over par final round of 74 for a 54-hole total of 219.

As predicted, his nearest challenger, Randall Vines managed to creep up the leader board to tie Ginn, at three-over par, when Ginn dropped a shot at the par-4 13th hole. Although Randall Vines eventually went on to complete his round with a one-over par 73, one better than Ginn’s final round of 74, his final-day performance was not quite enough, as he finished two shots behind Ginn’s final three-round total of 219.

Third place was shared by two players, following a tie between John Williamson (New Zealand), with a final round of 76 for a 224 total, and Brian Jones (Australia), who made a late rush with a final round one-under par score of 71, also for a total of 224. Cheng Tsang Te (Taiwan) finished in fifth place with a three-round total of 225, followed in sixth place by Richard Ellis (New Zealand), who equaled the best score of the day (71) to finish with a 226 total. Others tied at 226 were former Malaysian Seniors Open Champion, John Clifford (Australia), along with Reynaldo Alit (Philippines) and Taiwanese legend, Hsieh Min-Nan

In his first appearance on the Asian Seniors Tour, Malaysia’s rising seniors star, M. Ramayah, finished with an impressive tenth position, with a 54-hole total of 227.

The clash of the rising stars of the future saw no let up, as Feldman Tan from SICC proved that his performance throughout the week was no 'flash in the pan', completing an arduous week with another impressive amateur performance of a 77 on an extremely testing 7,065 yard course, to take the ASM Amateur Championship title by one shot from Ng Yau Loong from Royal Johor GC. Paul Lim from Palm Resort GCC took third place with an 81, followed by the very impressive 14-year old, Lion Goh from Laguna National GCC, who carded an 82. Tan Sri Elyas Omar, the Malaysian Commissioner of Sports closed the day by thanking all concerned and pledging the full support of the Ministry of Sports for the proposed 2006 Asian Seniors Tour event in Malaysia.
